明治維新の時、日本にやってきたヨーロッパ人はイタリアや南仏などの地中海沿岸地域出身者を除くとセミを知らない者が多く、「なぜ木が鳴くのか」と尋ねた者もいた。現在でも、日本のドラマを欧米に出すとき、夏の場面ではセミの声を消して送る。日本ではいかにも暑い盛りのBGMと感じられるが、あちらでは妙なノイズが乗っていると思われる場合が多い。
